Pets are sensitive to severe cold and are at risk for frostbite and hypothermia.

The American Humane Society has released a list of tips to keep your pet safe during the winter months:

Take them out to use the bathroom and for exercise but keep them indoors, exposed skin on noses, ears and paw pads can quickly freeze and suffer permanent damage.

Protect the paws on your cat or dog from salt. The salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate your pet’s feet. Wipe all paws with a damp towel before your pet licks them and irritates his/her mouth.

And lastly, speak up if you see a pet left outside. Polity talk to the owner and if they don’t respond well, document the situation and notify your local animal control agency or county sheriffs office.
