The Geisinger Family Health Associates Big Valley Area Medical Center is almost completed.

The $2.8 million medical center began in May and is expected to open on Dec. 5.

Apart from expanding the exam rooms, there is now a diagnostic lab room, which patients can use from 7 a.m. to noon, five days a week.

The CareSite Pharmacy has plenty of over the counter items, as well as prescription drugs and it takes all insurance plans.

A ceremonial ribbon cutting and open house has been tentatively scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 12, 2017.

The 20th annual Juniata River Valley Festival of Ice kicks off today in downtown Lewistown and continues tomorrow.

This year, the theme is, “Honoring Our Military,” as a salute to all American soldiers.

The theme will be represented throughout the festival — from the ice sculptures on the sidewalks to the decorations on the Mifflin County Historic Courthouse.

The Juniata Valley Chapter of The Compassionate Friends will be holding a candle lighting to honor the memories of all children, regardless of age, who have died.

The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec.11, in the lower level of the Grove Memorial United Methodist Church, at 611 S. Main St., Lewistown.

It will feature candle lighting, special music, poems and reading of the children’s names.

Those attending are encouraged to bring a framed picture of their child to place on the memory table.

This event is part of the 20th annual Worldwide Candle Lighting of TCF.

The Shining Light Through the Darkness walking light display at Kish Park will open for the holiday season on Saturday Dec 3.

The park will be lit up for the event’s 10th season and will continue through Jan. 6, 2017.

Everything at the park is offered at no cost, and the event is run by donations and volunteers . Nightly entertainment, food and select nights of wagon rides are planned.
